Silent Terror: Russia Attacks Civilians in Ukraine with Drones

Every night, more and more Russian drones appear in the skies of Ukraine, deliberately attacking civilians. In recent days, Ukraine has experienced a series of strikes using Iranian Shahed drones, which have become a weapon of night terror. The latest attack, aimed at Kyiv and its suburbs, brought destruction and casualties: in the Solomensky district of the capital, a drone hit a high-rise building, which led to the death of a 14-year-old schoolgirl and injuries to residents of the building. At the same time, debris from one of the drones killed a teacher in the suburbs of Kyiv.

The destruction affected other areas of Kyiv, damaging many buildings and cars, which demonstrates the ongoing threat to civilians forced to wake up to the sounds of air raid sirens and explosions.

A wave of drones also hit the Dnieper, where buildings and infrastructure were damaged. A series of night attacks damaged energy facilities in a number of regions, causing temporary power outages. Attacks on the power grid have become a regular tactic for the Russian Federation, especially with the onset of autumn cold weather, which seeks to undermine Ukraine’s ability to provide heat and light to its cities. In Ivano-Frankivsk and other regions, damage to power grids from drones caused mass power outages and partial blackouts of entire districts.

Despite the protective efforts of the Ukrainian air defense, many drones still break through the defense.
Night attacks not only increase psychological pressure on Ukrainian citizens, but also cause irreparable losses and destruction among residential areas and infrastructure. The Kiev region, as well as the south and east of the country, are under constant threat of attack. Ukraine is actively building up its defense systems, but the lack of modern air defense systems limits its ability to defend against large-scale attacks by drones and missiles. The international community regards these actions of Russia as a clear violation of humanitarian law, since such attacks inevitably lead to casualties among civilians, which makes them an act of terror. The opposition People’s Movement “Democratic Choice of Turkmenistan” expresses solidarity with the Ukrainian people, sharply condemning the actions of the Kremlin. We declare that terror against civilians is unacceptable, including such a policy of the Kremlin, which is aimed at intimidating and destroying the brotherly people of Ukraine, with whom Turkmenistan has historically close cultural and historical ties.

The Kremlin, in turn, uses these attacks to support domestic propaganda and demonstrate Russia’s military capabilities, trying to instill in its audience the illusion of control over the situation. However, the growing number of casualties among civilians in Ukraine only intensifies international criticism, and undermines Russia’s image as a global player.

This “war of attrition” has serious humanitarian consequences and makes the situation in Ukraine even more critical. Despite the Kremlin’s assurances of its desire to “save the people of Donbass,” daily attacks on Ukrainian cities indicate otherwise.
